The fashion and textile industry is one of the biggest players when it comes to environmental impact and human rights violations, and we strongly believe young people have a crucial role to play in changing the clothing industry for the better. This teaching module was developed in collaboration with Remake, a global advocacy organization fighting for fair pay and climate justice in the clothing industry.

Using Remake’s incredible resources, we created this in depth look at social and environmental sustainability within the clothing industry through a critical and empathic lens.

THE RISING x REMAKE TEACHING MODULE IS DIVIDED INTO THREE UNITS:

  • PEOPLE

How Do the Clothes I Wear Impact People?

  • PLANET

How Do the Clothes I Wear Impact Our Planet?

  • POWER

Who Has the Power to Create Positive Change in the Clothing Industry?

EDUCATOR TESTIMONIALS

“The Remake sustainability teaching module provided the tangible connections for students to see behind the curtain of the fast fashion industry. The modules walk students step-by-step through the societal impacts that everyday clothes can have half way around the world. This teaching resource provides clarity around the concepts of sustainable fashion and allows people to discuss the shortcomings of the fashion industry. Making these concepts known and allowing students to discuss these topics as common language is a powerful step in the right direction.”

Nolan Chapman, Educator (Pilot Program Participant)

“Kaitlyn, Emily and Wendy Mckay presented at the Central Okanagan Teachers' Association (COTA) Summer Conference 2022 & Winter Conference 2023. Their session, entitled "Fashion Sustainability: How our clothes impact you and our planet", was extremely well-received. In a throw-away fast fashion world, we need entrepreneurs and more voices to emphasize the impact that waste and lack of awareness is having on us and our planet. Their presentation to educators provided valuable and useful materials to implement into the curriculum so our youth can be part of a positive change to making fashion more sustainable. COTA has invited them back to our provincial professional development day in hopes of sharing their passion and ideas more widely.”
